Curriculum
The curriculum used in music follows the state-wide music TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills) as well as the MISD Scope and Sequence. In the music room, we focus on many aspects of music – including rhythm, melody, theory, composers, terminology, choral singing, movement and instruments. Kindergarten, First, and Second graders start with the basics of beat, pitch matching, movement, and instruments. Third through Fifth graders continue to enjoy the music making process and learn to compose and write music. Third grade will have a special field trip to the Dallas Symphony Orchestra in November. Fourth and Fifth grade students learn to play the recorder in the classroom and are invited to join the Walker Choir on Wednesdays.
Knowledge & Skills:
The expectations for music are for each student to: give his/her personal best & participate; be responsible for his/her actions and materials & respect others; and listen carefully & follow procedures Dallas Symphony Orchestra
Third grade will attend the DSO on Tuesday, November 13 at the Myerson in Downtown Dallas.
Walker Choir
The Choir is open to students in 4th and 5th grades. The choir performs concerts both in December and May. Practices are after school every week on Wednesday 3:00-4:15
Recorders All Fourth and Fifth graders will have an opportunity to learn how to play the recorder in music class. Music to practice can be found under the recorder page.
